“One of the Greatest Human Beings I’ve Ever Been Around”: LeBron James Pays Tribute to Former Coach Paul Silas After Leading Lakers to Win vs Pistons

It’s another tragic loss for the NBA world as 3x NBA champion and former coach to LeBron James, Paul Silas, passed away on Sunday. He was 79 years old and led an illustrious basketball career. Notably, he was LeBron James’ first NBA head coach and in very many ways kickstarted his legacy. LeBron James recently paid homage to Paul Silas.

After leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a win against the Detroit Pistons 124-117, a reporter asked James about his thoughts on the passing of Paul Silas. He responded, “Probably one of the greatest human beings I have ever been around“.

He acknowledged that he started the league under his tutelage. The four-time NBA champion remembered that Silas’ command, principles, attention to detail, and love for his family made him a cut above the rest.

I would always try to look for him in the crowds“, admitted LeBron when Paul Silas would come to watch a game when he was playing.

He extended his condolences to Silas’ whole family, including his son Stephen Silas, who is the current head coach of the Houston Rockets. James continued to say that it was indeed sad news for him and the whole Cleveland Cavaliers team who were coached by Paul Silas.

Silas became the Cavs’ head coach in 2003, the same year that LeBron James made his entry into pro basketball.

I coached LeBron for two years, his first two years, and LeBron was unbelievable“, said the former head coach. Paul Silas played for 16 seasons in the NBA, winning three championships, and coaching several franchises. He was named an All-Star twice, in 1972 and 1975. He finished his stint in the league with more than 10,000 points and 10,000 rebounds.

Silas’ daughter, Paula Silas-Guy first broke the news of her father’s passing after succumbing to a cardiac arrest. An outpouring of tributes came in from across the NBA world.

The NBA also released a statement offering their “deepest condolences” to the Silas family.
