After weeks of being kept in the dark, it is now officially confirmed where Brittney Griner is headed. She is being transferred to the IK-2 penal colony located in Mordovia which is around 400 kilometers southeast of Moscow.

The language barrier might benefit Brittney Griner

Phoenix Mercury superstar Brittney Griner has spent over 200 days in prison following her arrest earlier this year. However, her surroundings will quickly change as she heads to a penal colony.

The prison is located in Mordovia and is surrounded by snowy forests and swamps giving it a mystic feel. According to Olga Romanova, head of an organization that defends the human rights of inmates, she will be protected by the authority till negotiations are ongoing.

Officials are negotiating a swap deal that can bring Griner back home. Considering the severity and complexity of the case, talks have been slow. The moment the negotiations break down, she will be in danger according to Romanova.

Moreover, she feels Griner not knowing the language will solve some of her problems. The two-time Olympian is an American while also being black and lesbian which will make her a target in the prison.

As per Romanova, “It’s a good thing she doesn’t speak Russian, she won’t be able to understand what people say to her. I think that could solve some of her problems.” Interestingly enough, although the prison conditions are harsh, Griner’s prison is “normal” as per local standards.

Russia hopes to complete swap deal

Amidst the wave of bad news for Brittney Griner and her family, she finally has some hope. According to the latest reports, talks have strengthened and Russia hopes to complete the deal.

The deal will potentially involve Griner while the United States of America hands over notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout who is serving time in the USA. He was arrested in 2008 on multiple charges related to arms trafficking.

Former Marine Paul Whelan might also potentially be discussed in the deal. He is being housed in a similar penal colony located in Mordovia.
