“Only Brittney Griner Would Try to Go Vegan in a Russian Prison”: Despite Shunning Meat at First, WNBA Star Failed to Make Big Lifestyle Change

The Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner is fighting imprisonment in Russia far away from home. It has been almost 225 days since Griner was arrested at Moscow Airport under drug possession charges and detained. After six months of detainment, BG was sentenced to nine years in prison by a Russian court on the 4th of August. BG’s teammates, coaches, and family continue to show their full support on her tough journey to freedom.
Meanwhile, Griner’s WNBA teammate Diana Taurasi revealed that the eight-time All-Star tried to make a big lifestyle change during her first week in a Russian prison. However, the 31-year-old could not keep up with the change.

Brittney Griner had been taking solace in books and letters from loved ones in imprisonment. It has been a long while since the 2014 WNBA champ has even seen a basketball court, let alone touched a ball. For far too long, Griner has been away from the game that she is immensely passionate about.

During her time in prison, BG relied on the work of famous authors like Kafka, James Patterson, Keith Richards, and Dostoevsky. Her teammates and coaches sent her letters to keep her spirits high.
Talking about Griner’s time in prison, Taurasi shared that she could see BG on a journey to finding the joy of waking up every day. The three-time WNBA champ revealed that Griner talked about going vegan during her first week in her first letter. Diana Taurasi added, “She went back to eating meat. Which is kind of funny. Only BG would try to go vegan in a Russian prison.”
When will Griner return home?

Griner has stayed strong during an expectedly tough phase in her life. She has shown bravery despite being locked away in Russia. The American authorities have been doing everything they can to bring Griner home.
The Biden Administration also proposed a potential prisoner exchange deal to Moscow. They offered to release Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout in exchange for Griner and former US Marine Paul Whelan. The offer was made before the Russian court’s verdict on Griner’s case. Unfortunately, the Russian authorities haven’t authorized any deals yet.
