Adversity and abandonment go hand-in-hand. Many NBA players have faced abandonment. Jimmy Butler was thrown out of his home by his mother at the age of 13. Wesley Matthews Jr, whose father Wes Matthews Sr., who was also an NBA player, left him too. Dennis Rodman had faced a similar situation as well. There are many more cases of abandonment in the NBA. One such case is of the renowned former player and TV personality Charles Barkley.
Barkley opened up about the relationship he has shared with his father. In 2022, he sat down with The Volume’s Renee Paquette to delve into this aspect of his life.

Charles Barkley harmonized with his father
In this episode of The Volume, Barkley was discussing relationships and how his marriage has lasted for more than 30 years. He applauded his wife, Maureen Blumhardt, and stated that “she is a great mother”. Which is why he said, ”I wanna be a great father“. For the NBA Hall-of-Famer, parenting is a formative aspect of one’s life. In this context, he talked about his father.
“My father passed away a couple of weeks ago. We didn’t have a great relationship my entire life. We reconciled later in life and became friends but I really wanna be a good father and I really worked hard to do that. Because listen, it is hard to be going all the time and I wouldn’t change things because it has given me so much in my life. But it’s hard.”, said Barkley.
Barkley also touched upon being in the limelight. During the podcast, he said that people usually look at the good things that happen in the life of famous personalities like him, overlooking the bad. He reiterated, ”Ain’t no perfect people out here, you get judged a lot when you are in limelight. We all got flaws.” Barkley credited his wife for accepting him and acknowledged her role. He said, again and again, that, “she doesn’t judge me and accepts who I am. She accepts my flaws.”
