Although the Lakers had gathered an experienced set of players for the new season, several question marks were raised about their balance. With an ageing squad and players who occupy acres of floor space, it was always an uphill task. Yet, fans still had a ray of hope that they would pull it together. On the contrary, it has been a wild start to their campaign, with the roster unable to string together multiple victories. After another poor outing against the Bucks, analyst Paul Pierce has raised serious doubts over LeBron James and co.

Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce featured in 19 seasons of the NBA. The 2008 Finals MVP averaged almost 20 points, and was an immaculate guard-forward. A fearless assassin, Pierce was fortunate enough to witness the rise of LeBron James. The 36-year-old, who continues to mesmerize one and all, has been on the sidelines for a while now, owing to an abdominal injury. And the former player Pierce has made a bold statement regarding the men in yellow and purple.

Pierce believes LeBron James and Lakers can’t win the championship

After a series of disappointments last year, James called for a serious regrouping. Under Frank Vogel, the franchise has seen joyous highs, but also experienced abysmal lows. After recruiting the likes of Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony among other vibrant youngsters, Jeanie Buss and co. would’ve believed they had done their job. In a harsh reality check however, the Lakers sit in 9th position, with an extremely challenging schedule ahead.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Paul Pierce offered his comments on LeBron. He stated that he always respected the 17-time All-star, but insisted that even he couldn’t guide the current setup to glory. “I respect what he’s done for the game and the longevity he’s been able to provide and the shows he’s given us and spectacular athleticism. [But] This team as constructed can not win a championship,” laid out the 44-year-old.

This was a harsh prediction from Pierce, and one that is surely arguable. Do you agree with him? If there is one thing that LeBron James has thrived on in the past, it is proving the doubters wrong. Yet, this is a mountainous climb, even for him.
