WNBA Star Brittney Griner has seen many people, including some famous politicians, coming to her aid. It’s been over 200 days since she was arrested and many have been calling for the US government to secure her release. Even a top Democrat explained how Griner is in a cage in Russia and requested the president to get her back as soon as possible.

Griner has been in Russia since February after she was detained at the Moscow airport. She was subsequently arrested and put on trial. After hearing her case, the Russian court sentenced Griner to nine years in prison.

Following the sentencing, the US government started talking to their Russian counterparts. They have reportedly offered a prisoner swap deal for getting Griner and another American back home. And the talks between the governments have been going on since then.

Renowned US politician requests the State Department to get Brittney Griner back home

The US congress is in session and a top US politician spoke of the Brittney Griner situation. Sheila Jackson Lee, who is a Democrat from the region of Texas, opened up on what the US should do in these circumstances.

She said,” I want us to give more money to the hostage section of the department of state because people like Brittney Griner in cages in Russia. We have to get out hostages.”

“The issue with Brittney Griner, she’s a hostage in Putin’s Russia. Playing basketball there was her only crime. If you will, and there she’s is in a cage in Russia,” she further added.

The congresswoman raved about the work the government has done. But she won’t be at peace until all the Americans are safe and back home.

The talks between the two countries have been processing slowly but there still seems to be some hope for Griner to come back home. We will have to wait and see what will happen in the next few weeks or months.
