A proposition regarding the end of the unanimous voting rule for the imposition of death penalties was presented by Florida governor Ron DeSantis recently. On Monday, DeSantis spoke at the Florida Sheriff’s Association where he proposed the idea of implementing a ‘supermajority’ system in case of death penalties. The Republican candidate has been advocating for a ‘supermajority’ after the Parkland school shooter’s death penalty was denied following a rejection from three out of the twelve jury members. However, the amendments suggested by DeSantis recently prompted Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to speak out some harsh truths about the potential US Presidential candidate.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shared a bold take on DeSantis’ ‘supermajority’ calls. He also ended up comparing DeSantis with former POTUS Donald Trump. Moreover, the six-time NBA champ also laid out the hidden realities of the judicial system.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar slams DeSantis’ ‘supermajority’ calls on Death Penalty
In a recent update on his blog Kareem Substack, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said, “I continue to understand why DeSantis hates education so much—because he doesn’t understand simple logic—or even facts. And he doesn’t think voters do either.” Moreover, during his recent speech, DeSantis blamed a single jury member for stopping the Parkland school shooter’s execution. However, Kareem pointed out that the decision was made after three jurors were not in favor of the death penalty.

Furthermore, the 19-time All-Star also questioned DeSantis’ choice of defining ‘supermajority’ as eight jury members. Kareem clarified that a ‘supermajority’ would have been seven people and not eight. The Lakers legend believed that the Florida governor would have defined the term ‘supermajority’ as eleven if he was really concerned about a single juror affecting the execution process.
Meanwhile, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar argued that innocent people might end up getting executed if the majority factor of the death penalty was changed. The NBA Hall of Famer also ended up making a huge claim about how DeSantis’ move would affect people. The 75-year-old wrote, “DeSantis wants to make it easier to execute people. It shouldn’t be easier. But he’s willing to risk innocent lives and spend Florida’s tax dollars if it will get him a few more uninformed votes.”

Kareem felt that DeSantis’ idea would be a disaster in terms of causing danger to innocent lives. He suggested that life imprisonment without the possibility of parole was ‘significantly cheaper’ than the death penalty.
Kareem compares DeSantis to Donald Trump
Kareem was not in favor of DeSantis’s proposal. He believed it was a bad decision to make changes in the death penalty rules. Moreover, the Lakers legend compared DeSantis to Donald Trump. Kareem Abdul Jabbar said, “Ironically, he’s just stealing a page out of Trump’s book. They really are the same except that DeSantis is more efficient in his evil.”
