Russia Issues Stern Update On “Prisoner Exchange” Deal Rumored For The Release Of WNBA Star Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner has been dealing with the judicial system in Russia for over 150 days and counting. It was rumored that a deal between the United States of America and Russia was underway to bring the WNBA star home.

Griner is a two-time Olympic medalist and a Phoenix Mercury player in the WNBA. She has been detained in Russia for carrying illegal cartridges. However, Adam Silver, who is the commissioner for the NBA, is working closely with the US government. The purpose of the union is to bring the athlete home.

The US government recently announced that a prisoner exchange deal with Russia is in the works. The purpose of the same is to bring Brittney Griner back home. Russia recently responded to the rumors with an update of its own. A Russian official, Dmitry Peskov, commented on the deal. Furthermore, it appears that the deal is far from being finalized, and it will be announced only when it is final.

A proposal was put forth to Russia for the exchange of Griner for Victor Bout, who was arrested in the year 2008. Victor Bout was a Russian arms dealer and had been in the US for over a decade. 

An update from Russia on Brittney Griner 

For the first time since her arrest in February, Russia has issued a statement on the Brittney Griner situation. 

According to Fox News, Peskov, who is a spokesperson for Kremlin, said, “We know that such issues are discussed without any such release of information; normally, the public learns about it when the agreements are already implemented.”

Furthermore, President Biden instructed his officials and security team to leave no stone unturned to bring Brittany home safely. Moreover, it appears that the deal will take over a few months and the update from Russia is less than desirable. A promising update for Griner’s return is necessary as the entire nation awaits her freedom.

LeBron James recently made his first comments on the Brittney Griner situation. Moreover, the former Cavalier’s comment on the Griner return debate came in the promo for the show ‘The Shop.’ He felt that Griner must be feeling alone and alienated in Russia and would wonder if returning to the States was worth it.
