Kyrie Irving ventured out during the off-season to weigh the options he had. He reportedly spoke to different teams, laid out his terms, and negotiated. In the end, he resigned to remain with the Brooklyn Nets. Following this, trouble came his way after his comments off the court, leading to a suspension and losing out on several endorsement contracts off the court. With time the situation seemingly improved, and Irving’s turbulent season tasted normalcy, leading to some clarity of thought about his future with the team.

Irving’s agent, Shetellia Irving, revealed to Bleacher Report that the seven-time All-Star wants to stay with the Nets. She said, “The desire is to make Brooklyn home, with the right type of extension.” Further, she added that the “ball is in the Nets’ court”.  The talks around an extension have apparently not yet ensued. Notably, Irving is in the final year of his contract with the Nets. If an extension is off the table, the NBA champion will find himself in the free agency pool. Amid these talks, NBA fans chimed in with their varied opinions.

While Celtics fans were undoubtedly disappointed, reports claimed that Irving’s decision was based on the tensions which he spoke about to the media. He stated that his decision was driven by the urge to live closer to his family. Irving stated that following his grandfather’s demise, the relationship with his family took “way higher precedence than the organization.”
