Before the season began, most of the odds pegged the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets as the favourites to win their conferences and face each other in the Finals. The Russell Westbrook acquisition by the Lakers made everyone think that they have a strong chance. Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Russ will be the winners, for sure, many thought. That was not to be. On the other hand, the Nets already had Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden before the season. They were already perennial favourites. But in reality, both the franchises fell down on their faces.

Los Angeles Lakers: Their season in short

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired former MVP Russell Westbrook alongside other well known players such as Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard. They were the favourites to sit at the top of the Western Conference. Instead, they disappointed hard. Despite LeBron breaking new records and having a great season, the team fell way short of expectations. They had an old and mismanaged roster. Anthony Davis being constantly missing didn’t help either and Westbrook’s performances were left to desire.

Kyrie Irving Bombarded New King of Twitter Elon Musk With Peculiar Question

The Lakers had the sixth-worst winning percentage in the history of their franchise this past season, and they had the 3rd worst record in the league after the All-Star break. They entered the season with the second-best betting odds to win the title, so the final results were shocking to say the least. They ended up at 11th, way below the Playoffs spot and couldn’t even qualify for the Play-Ins this time around.

The Brooklyn Nets, on the other hand, didn’t have an atrocious season. Although they fell to a renewed Boston Celtics in the first round of the Playoffs, their league record wasn’t too bad, having a 0.537 winning percentage. Still, it was disappointing that they couldn’t qualify for the Playoffs directly (that is without having to prove themselves in the playins).

The acquisitions of Ben Simmons, Andre Drummond and Seth Curry turned out to be of no use. Instead, they let James Harden go to the 76ers which dampened their offense. Both Durant and Irving fell short of expectations and everything turned out to be a flop for coach Steve Nash. Same goes true for the Lakers coach Frank Vogel who sadly got fired despite winning a title in 2020.
