Professional sports can bring a range of emotions and adversity. The NBA has a long schedule, thousands of km of air travel, and changing hotels every other day. These challenges are then multiplied when fans go too far. There have been examples of such incidents, the biggest one being Malice in the Palace. During that night, chairs were thrown, fans and players were hitting each other, and children were crying.?

Trae Young opens up about a harrowing incident

Brand Developer and Marketer for Klutch Sports, Winston Nelson sat down with Trae Young during Young?s YouTube show From the Point. The duo were discussing the amount of hate the Guard gets in the league. Nelson shifted the attention to an incident that attests to this hate.

He states, “The infamous New York series always comes up when you hear F*** You Trae Young. Fans actually got as far as spit on you during that game. A lot of people didn?t know that, a fan spit on you.?

Young recalled the incident, and said, ?To be honest with you, I didn?t know during the game obviously you watch, you see it happen, You are the topic on everything, but I necessarily didn’t feel it during the game but it was crazy; little things like that are uncalled for. Basketball, it can be competitive, you can yell whatever you want. I don?t care. You can yell whatever towards me as long as it?s not towards my family, nothing towards them. I don?t care what you say towards me. But doing stuff like that, that?s over for you?

Winston adds, ?That takes the humanness out of it. At the end of the day, we are all humans?.

He then asked the Atlanta Hawks guard if there was something he wants to add to the incident. Young then insists that he did ?nothing really too much? and didn?t pursue a lengthy legal case against the fan who spit on him. However, he naturally looked displeased when talking about this event on the home floor of the New York Knicks.

The context of the incident

The spitting incident occurred during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round between the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks on 27 May 2021 in Madison Square Garden. The fan who spit on Young leaned over renowned rapper 50 Cent to commit the act. When the organizers of the Arena learned about the incident, they banned the fan for life. The 2020-21 season was played at the peak of the pandemic and Atlanta Hawks were in an away-from-home situation.

?The COVID-19 norms required people to commit to social distancing and avoid coming in contact with sneezing, coughing, or any form of droplets capable of transmitting coronavirus. In this way, spitting on someone majorly violates protocols during the mask mandates era.

This incident certainly left a nasty taste in humble Young. What do you think about the incident? Do share in the comments below.
