The GOAT debate is an ever-raging topic. Though the most prominent names remain the same, sometimes someone brings in a name that makes an intriguing case. And this time it was NBA and Los Angeles Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal who backed an unlikely candidate.

It’s no secret that Julius Iring was Shaq’s favorite player growing up. Shaq adored Dr. J and wanted to be like him. He has said several times that without Dr J there would no Shaq. Shaq says, ” “So we having a meeting cause we’re in business together and I told him, “Hey, I wanna make this the best for you coz if it wasn’t for you, there wouldn’t be no me.’ Everybody’s dreams not gonna come true. My dreams, when it came to Dr. J came true, but I don’t know how.”

Shaquille O’Neal backs Dr. J’s case as the GOAT

Shaq says even though Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and others made the NBA great, it was Dr. J who started it. He says, “Mike and Kobe and all these guys were great. But you started it. We need to work on letting the world know who started this”

Irving was an iconic figure in basketball in the 80s and he was loved by fans for his legendary exploits. He was a four-time MVP and was an all star for 16 years straight. There was no one who could electrify a crowd with their air time and rim-shattering dunks. Sure, there have been more famous aerial threats. Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, and Dominique Wilkins all were great, but they took their cues from Dr. J. He bought excitement to the game that only a few could do. And fewer have lasted it for over two decades.

But more than his talent, Dr. J was known for his kindness and generosity. And this made him one of the most beloved players in NBA history. One of those who he inspired was Shaq, who became an unstoppable force. Shaq loves Dr. J, and he made sure he mentioned him in his hall of fame speech. Still, to this day, Shaq shows his admiration, respect, love, and loyalty to Dr. J.
