Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is having a tough time holding onto his career in recent times. The Portugal team manager Fernando Santos shockingly benched the five-time Ballon d’Or winner during a knockout game against Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup recently. A while ago, Ronaldo also parted ways with Manchester United, a club that helped him establish his name in the soccer world. Amid the struggles for the Portuguese superstar, a US men’s national soccer team veteran recently made an intriguing comparison between Ronaldo and the Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. He claimed that Ronaldo has entered the ‘Michael Jordan’ phase in his life.

Michael Jordan was the most dominating player in the NBA from 1984 to 1998. The Chicago Bulls legend won six- championships with the franchise until 1998. However, Jordan retired for the second time in his career in 1999 before eventually returning to the league with the Washington Wizards in 2001. Recently, former US soccer team star Jimmy Conrad connected Cristiano Ronaldo’s current form with the trajectory of the evolution of Michael Jordan’s career.

Conrad believed that Ronaldo might be facing similar circumstances that Michael Jordan dealt with during his time with the Wizards from 2001 to 2003. He reckoned that things might never return to normalcy for Ronaldo after his recent lack of form and receding prime. Unfortunately, the Manchester United legend has only scored one goal in the FIFA World Cup 2022 so far.

Conrad’s comments came after the recent decision by the team manager Santos to bench Ronaldo. He felt that the 37-year-old’s career was headed towards a less productive phase just like Michael Jordan experienced with the Washington Wizards.

Ronaldo was recently benched during the game against Switzerland on December 3 after reports of internal team disputes. Despite the captain’s absence, Portugal went on to defeat the Swiss team impressively by 6-1.
