Stephen Curry is one of the NBA’s biggest superstars. At just 6’2″, Curry has taken over the league by storm. Not by flashy dunks that feature insane athleticism, but by simply making effective use of the three-point line. Regarded by many as the best shooter in NBA history, Curry changed the way basketball is played.

Today, it is of primary importance that a player must be able to score three-pointers with ease. In fact, teams have even spread out the floor during their matches to enable opportunities for long-distance scoring.

Moreover, Curry’s impact has gone beyond the NBA and right down to the grassroots level. In fact, many kids today try to perfect their shooting with him being their inspiration. Furthermore, this act of shooting three-pointers can be witnessed in college basketball too.

However, few feel that Curry’s game has made basketball gameplay worse. One such person is Gus Johnson, who made a statement on Curry during a recent college basketball game.

During the Big East Tournament finals between the Creighton Bluejays and the Villanova Wildcats, Gus Johnson made a statement regarding the heavy, but poor, three-point shooting in the game and blamed Stephen Curry for it.

“Some of these shots these kids are taking are horrible,” he said. “Is this this analytics cr*p?” said Johnson.

Clearly, Johnson feels that Curry is responsible for players attempting three-point shots. Moreover, Curry is a player who can hit such shots despite being heavily guarded and Johnson feels that players today are trying to be like Curry. They attempt long-distance shots despite being heavily guarded. In fact, both teams in the game shot poorly from beyond the arc. Together they shot just 18% from the three-point line.

In Conclusion

Although Curry changed the game, it’s not fair to blame him for poor shooting performances by others. In fact, Curry has actually improved the game. Teams have now realized the importance of a three-pointer as it improves the offense.

However, that does not mean that every shot taken must be a three-pointer. Defenses are smart enough to prevent open long-distance opportunities from occurring. So the best plan would be to get the most efficient shot available for that possession. This allows a team to be an interior and exterior threat. To put it simply, Curry has only allowed the game to be played in a way that provides highly efficient shots from beyond the arc.
