Russell Westbrook is struggling this season. He is averaging well below his career average and his move to the Los Angeles Lakers hasn’t worked out so far. Consequently, he has been made the scapegoat for the Lakers’ struggles.
Many people have criticized Westbrook this season, and he has not found a lot of support. But another superstar has now to come to Westbrook’s aid. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry came to his defense. Curry said “I told him when we played them in L.A. a couple of days ago that I respect how he’s handled the whole year, just in terms of everything he’s been saying and how he’s been handling himself and protecting his family,”

Curry added, “It is the nature of the beast. And in a certain perspective, they build you up to break you down. The real ones who have done amazing things in this league know what that means. He’s a professional, and I’m proud of the way he’s conducting himself, and I’m there for him.”

It was great to see the comradeship between on-court rivals. Curry and Westbrook might have been rivals for a few years, but they have always shared a cordial and respectful relationship.

The Lakers were built for a championship or bust run, and it is increasingly looking like a bust. The team in nine games is currently in the ninth spot in the West. As a result, the 14-year veteran has been the main target of the fans and Russ has not helped his case either. He is leading the league in turnovers per game and he is shooting less than 30% from three-point range.

The Lakers had given up a lot for Russ and many fans have called for him to be traded. They have struggled with chemistry as they have been dealing with injuries all season long. Anthony Davis had missed 28 games while LeBron James has missed 18. The Lakers will hope that they can become healthy by the start of the playoffs, or their season is done. Russ also will need to step up his game or his chance at winning a ring may be gone forever.
