After stepping down as an NBA great, His Airness once gave a shout-out to a young Serena Williams who was making her way to GOAT conversations in tennis circles. Besides, the two have also mirrored their phenomenal on-court success in their off-court ventures. Additionally, the business interests of Jordan and Williams have converged at one point as well.

Michael Jordan and Serena Williams have been endorsing a sports drink-manufacturing company worth $19 billion. Interestingly, the company’s recent collaboration with Serena Williams pays homage to MJ’s iconic 1991 debut with them.

Numerous lucrative endorsements came Michael Jordan’s way ever since he kick-started his NBA journey. It was in 1991 that the sports drink-manufacturing giant Gatorade had shaken hands with the Chicago Bulls icon for a 10-year endorsement deal. MJ then signed the deal with Gatorade as its only endorser. Subsequently, Jordan debuted for Gatorade’s famous ‘Be Like Mike’ commercial. The ad featured Jordan in action during the successful 1991 NBA season.

In one of their recent commercials, Gatorade has paid homage to Jordan and his iconic 1991 commercial. Tennis legend Serena Williams and other sporting icons have been featured in Gatorade’s latest ad. Serena Williams has posted this commercial on her official Instagram handle. The video opens with Michael Jordan going for a dunk in Bulls colors. “Whatever you do, make it great @gatorade,” Serena Williams captioned her post.

The iconic ‘Be Like Mike’ commercial

Michael Jordan’s debut commercial with Gatorade opened with him going for a difficult yet successful layup during the 1991 NBA Finals against the Lakers. Soon the video cuts to footages of children trying to score like Michael Jordan. Besides, Jordan himself can be seen playing with a bunch of kids. The commercial’s vocal goes, “Sometimes I dream that he is me. You’ve got to see that’s how I dream to be. I dream I move, I dream I groove like Mike. If I could be like Mike.”

‘Be Like Mike’ is one of the many MJ23 commercials that has shaped NBA popular culture.
