By winning Game 5 against the Cleveland Cavaliers in an exciting Eastern Conference first-round series, the New York Knicks made history, qualifying for the second round of the playoffs just the 3rd time in the century. The last time the Knicks made it past the opening round was in 2013. The Knicks never trailed in their fifth game this postseason thanks to their effective defense, increasing their lead to as high as 18 points. Mitchell Robinson scored 18 rebounds, while Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 23 points.

After the game, Brunson started a trend that Knicks fans and teammates such as Josh Hart have perpetuated. In addition to the spectacular victory, their off-court antics drew fans’ attention. The Knicks’ dominance on the glass ended up being the game-winning factor. New York enjoyed a 48-30 lead in rebounds thanks to Robinson’s 11 offensive rebounds, and they dominated second-chance points with a 20-3 margin.

Cleveland tried their best, but the Knicks held on to win and move to the second round, where they will play the Miami Heat. Donovan Mitchell of Cleveland led with 28 points while Darius Garland added 21.

Jalen Brunson’s superb performance against the Cavaliers on defense was crucial in the Knicks’ victory. The 26-year-old guard contributed four rebounds, two steals, and six assists to show off his playmaking skills. Although Brunson struggled from beyond the arc, missing all four of his attempts, his scoring was exceptional, making an incredible 10-of-18 field goal. Josh Hart concluded the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals in addition to Brunson’s performance.

The Knicks outscored the Cavaliers significantly in the second quarter, amassing a lead of up to 30 points thanks to their excellent defense, spearheaded by Brunson.
