“The Good Grass!”: Michael Jordan Once Flaunted His $20 Million Perfume Collection with Charisma and Witty Sense of Humor

Michael Jordan is the richest athlete in the world and his off-court work has been the major contributor in all of that. His deal with Nike coming of fruition pretty early in his career, set the tone for his future earnings perfectly. Air Jordans are a world wide status symbol in the sneaker/shoe world. Nike giving Michael the freedom to have his own legacy with the Jordan brand proved that they could predict the success. How much success even they couldn’t predict, but their impact over the industry was immense and that was solely because of Michael Jordan. Besides Air Jordans, Michael also extended his brand towards perfumes.
On The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Michael Jordan made an appearance to promote the movie Space Jam, and his new perfume collection. Michael Jordan Cologne became the best selling perfume brand at the time.

Jay Leno introduced all the fragrances of the perfume collections one by one and narrated their descriptions. He talked about ‘Rare Air’. Michael then advised him to try the ‘Home Run’, and Jay cracked jokes around the fact that this should be rare because MJ had hardly hit any home runs in his short baseball career. Then Jay went on to talk about the third fragrance ‘Pebble Beach’ which smelled like grass. Jay Leno then cracked a joke with his band member that he would like the ‘grass’ fragrance and started spraying it. Adding on to the humor, Michael wittily said, “The good grass!”. The audience kept laughing which just complimented with the humorous nature of Jordan.

The two got back to discussing the other two fragrances. ‘Cool’ and ‘Sensual’ were the other two fragrances in the cologne line. Michael loved to talk about his brand and Jay also had fun around it.

The descriptions of all the elements of the perfume line perfectly sum up Jordan’s personality. Michael kicked off a $20-million promotional blitz which was the Michael Jordan Cologne. Consisting 5 major elements, Michael described his perfumes as ‘light as air’.

‘Rare Air’ evokes his reputation for striving to new heights in basketball. The blend of cedarleaf, grapefruit and lemon represents the humanistic side of MJ. ‘Home Run’ gives a leathery touch, just like a baseball glove, with essences of green tea, clove, suede and incense. Then there’s ‘Pebble Beach’ which entails sage, lavender, fir and juniper berries. The fragrance brings together MJ’s golfer persona to relax and be at peace with himself. There’s ‘Cool’, with essences of cypress, rosewood, geranium and cognac. The ‘Sensual’ envelopes sandalwood, patchouli and musk.
