Tensions are rising within the Atlanta Hawks franchise which could have a lasting impact on the team and its players. But when the team’s head coach and the team’s star player can’t get on the same page, that is undoubtedly not good news for anyone. And that is what seems to be the case between Trae Young and Atlanta Hawks head coach Nate McMillan.

Trae Young sat out the last game that the Hawks played against the Denver Nuggets. And even though the team was without their leading scorer, the Hawks managed to secure the win, pushing their season record to 13-10.

When asked for the reason for Young’s absence, coach McMillan said, “miscommunication”. But the latest reports now indicate otherwise. Young missed the team’s shootaround first due to soreness in his shoulder.

He chose to focus on getting that treated and was still unsure about playing against the Denver Nuggets. McMillan gave Young two options: either come off the bench or don’t come to the game.

And as it turned out, Young chose to miss the game entirely. Fans were not happy about how everything turned out. One fan tweeted, “The kid is a spoiled brat.”

While another fan commented, “Trae Young is a chucker, who’s out there for stats and highlights. Plays zero defense on a team that values defense. He’ll never be the best player on a championship team, probably not even second best. Too small, too much shoot first mentality.”

Here are some more reactions from NBA Twitter:

Some fans were not happy with how Trae Young chose to deal with the whole situation, while some are blaming the team’s head coach.

Whatever the case may be, this cannot go on for long for the Hawks. In order for a team to flourish, the head coach and the team’s star certainly need to be on the same page.

The team is also currently working its way to adjust to playing with Dejounte Murray running the offense. The Hawks brought Murray over in the hopes of taking some of the offensive load off of Young and covering up for his defense side of the game.
