“Trailblazer. Icon”: Stephen Curry, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Other NBA Stars Pay Tribute to “Mr. 11” Bill Russell

Bill Russell was indeed an NBA legend. Along with winning 11 championships during his 13 years of being in the NBA, he also was a five-time MVP winner. He was the centerpiece of the legendary Boston Celtics team, known to be one of the strongest teams ever.

Known for his defensive abilities and rebounding, the Celtics center also averaged 19 points per game throughout his career. He holds many records in rebounding and defense, which have yet not been broken. He is also the only one, other than Wilt Chamberlain, to record 50 rebounds in a single game.

Bill Russell passed away peacefully on the night of the 31st of July, with his wife by his side. Being 88 years old, he was also suffering from a prolonged illness. Because of the same reason he could not present the Finals MVP trophy, which is named after him, to the 2022 Finals MVP, Stephen Curry. As soon as the news came out of the passing of the legend, NBA stars started paying tribute to the legend via Twitter.

Paying tribute to the legendary Bill Russell

A multitude of NBA stars paid their respects and tributes to the legend following his death. Here are some of the reactions from several NBA stars:

Dwyane Wade tweeted “Rest In Heaven, Mr. 11” to represent the astonishing 11 championships that he won in his 13 seasons in the NBA. He tweeted this along with his teammate on the Miami Heat, LeBron James, with whom he’s won two championships.

Carmelo Anthony also tweeted his condolences and paid his tribute by saying that Bill Russell revolutionized the game.

Other NBA stars joined in to pay their tributes as well to the Boston Celtics legend.

Bill Russell was a 12-time All-Star and was inducted into the Hall of Fame twice, once as a player in 1975 and again as a coach in 2021. Russell also won an Olympic gold medal with the US national basketball team at the 1956 Olympics.
