On 10th June 2023 UFC Champion Amanda Nunes announced that she had decided to step down from the Octagon. The Brazilian retired as a double champ and in doing so cemented herself as the GOAT of the women’s division. When asked about her retirement, president Dana White thanked Amanda and admitted the lack of surprise at her decision.

Amanda was in line to fight a trilogy with her longtime nemesis Julianna Pena but due to an injury to the Venezuelan settled for Irene Aldana instead. Fighting on the same card as fellow Brazilian Charles Olivera, Nunes signed off with a resounding victory despite having an injury. After her immediate retirement many athletes across the globe congratulated her for her indomitable feat, with NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal being one of them.

Shaquille O’Neal is undoubtedly a big friendly giant. The NBA Hall of Famer is known for his kindness and often down-to-earth personality, making him a common favorite. Quick in giving his flowers to those who deserve them, Shaq posted a story about Amanda silently applauding the Brazilian’s legacy. Sharing a post from Amanda herself the gentle giant was in awe of her impressive collection of belts.

Making her debut in 2013, the 10 years she spent with the UFC brought the ‘Lioness’ innumerous successes. Boasting an impressive CV, Nunes has defeated big names, the likes of Rhonda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena. Being the first openly lesbian fighter in the UFC, Amanda recently welcomed a baby with former UFC fighter and wife Nina Nunes. Certainly, this played a huge role in her decision to retire making her decision all the more commendable.

On a night with many finishes, Amanda and Irene Aldana went on to compete in all 5 rounds. Although the Mexican tried to contain the Brazilian, her efforts still fell short. Her resounding victory seems all the sweeter, considering that she wasn’t even supposed to kick. Later revealing the extent of her injury, Amanda truly proved to be a warrior.

The greatest woman fighter bows out in a fashionable manner

After being crowned champion Nunes put down her belts in the Octagon, cut her gloves off and announced her retirement. Riding a surge of adrenaline, she said “Brazil come get these belts! I am retiring,” bowing out in a fashionable manner.
