The NBA draft is the holy grail for struggling teams to rebuild and prepare for the future. Every year, the league’s bottom teams stand a chance to draft the best player with the number one overall pick. However, only once in a generation, a superstar prospect like LeBron James emerges, which forces many teams around the league to evaluate their options and consider making a run for a lottery pick. Interestingly, this process has got the term ‘tanking’ over the past few years. Needless to say, the 2023 NBA draft featuring Victor Wembanyama has ensued a ‘tankathon’ in the league.

The 7’2 wonder kid has emerged as one of the most hyped-up prospects in NBA. In fact, he has garnered immense praise from the King himself. However, amid all the frenzy, it appears Damian Lillard is not the biggest fan of the French sensation.

Since getting drafted a decade ago, despite exciting exit opportunities, Damian Lillard has always upheld his loyalty to the team. However, unfortunately, the Portland Trail Blazers have often failed to put a competent team around him. Likewise, this year, they are again hovering at the bottom of the standings with an underwhelming record of 28-31, seeded as the 12th seed in the Western Conference.

The Trail Blazers’ lowly standing has prompted many fans to campaign for ‘tanking’ for the rest of the season. Similarly, a prominent radio host in Portland took to social media and issued a hot take in a similar line. Moreover, he also suggested the Blazers go all in on the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.

“What the F**k??”: Raging Victor Wembanyama Exposes Basketball Association Over Bizarre ‘Fake Interview’ Shocker

It should not come as a shocker to many fans that Lillard has unselfishly given most of his career to the city of Portland. Unsurprisingly, anyone sidelining your efforts in the hopes of tanking for a 19-year-old would certainly erk you the wrong way. Likewise, Dame Dolla didn’t hesitate to speak his mind on the Wembanyama sweepstakes. Similarly, the French sensation may have acquired a sour taste after Lillard’s cold rejection.

Portland Trail Blazers’ odds in the 2023 NBA draft

Lillard’s Trail Blazers are in a very crucial spot in the season. According to many mock drafts and the current records, the Houston Rockets are expected to draft Wembanyama with the number 1 overall pick. Whereas, under varying circumstances, the Trail Blazers stand to have two picks or no picks in the first round this year.

The Blazers’ own first-round pick is owed to the Chicago Bulls. However, it will only convey if it falls outside the lottery picks. Similarly, the Blazers are set to receive a first-round pick from the New York Knicks if it falls outside the lottery range.

Consequently, if the Blazers were to ‘tank’ for the remaining season, they would have a good chance of landing the number one pick. They would also have an additional pick if the Knicks make the playoffs.
