The Golden State Warriors’ secret to success has undoubtedly been their strength in numbers. However, another defining quality of the Bay Area dynasty is player retention. The Warriors host multiple championship players who have been with the team all their careers. Among them, Stephen Curry stands out with 2x NBA MVPs and a host of other accolades. However, another lifelong Warrior, whose contributions usually go rather unnoticed, has been with the team for over half a decade.

The person in question is the 3x NBA champion, Kevon Looney. However, despite his production over the years, the 6’7” center has stayed under the radar for most of his stint with the Dubs. Unfortunately, he suffered a similar fate a few weeks ago after achieving something remarkable.

Kevon Looney has been a constant in the Warriors’ historic championship runs over the past decade. The Golden State Warriors drafted the 6’7” center from UCLA in the 2015 NBA draft in the first round with the third overall pick. Looney, for all intents and purposes, has embodied the Warriors’ culture in his personal code and has emerged as one of the most loyal players in the organization.

Apart from being loyal and having all the right intangibles, Looney, from all accords, is also an extremely hardworking and dedicated player. Despite career-altering injuries, Looney has emerged as an Iron man through sheer will and character, evident in his latest achievement. In last night’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, Looney recorded his 164th consecutive regular season game, which is equivalent to playing through two full seasons without missing a game.

Over the years, Looney has got the nod from his champion teammates and coach. However, his contributions have gone rather unnoticed by fans and the media. Meanwhile, according to an article by the Athletic“These Warriors don’t win without Loon”. Lead columnist Mark Thompson II thinks otherwise. 

Looney falls under the radar despite a stellar outing

A few weeks ago, the Warriors faced off against the Atlanta Hawks. The two teams pushed it to OT and eventually double OT. But the Warriors stopped the game from spiraling into 3OT.

In the final seconds of the 2OT, the Warriors, who had the last possession, sealed the victory on the back of a clutch play from Looney. However, after the game, social media buzzed with praises of Klay Thompson for scoring 54 points. Looney’s impressive play went under the radar soon after. But Mark Thompson II from the Athletic extensively pointed out how Looney has emerged as an invaluable member of the Warriors dynasty.
