“We Never Thought We Could Lose After That”: Billionaire Michael Jordan Unveiled How a Lakers Legend’s Criticism of His “Showboating” Fueled His NBA Legacy

Michael Jordan, who won the NBA championship six times had not yet started his record three-peat till 1991. Jordan and the Chicago Bulls finally looked ready to win their first NBA championship in 1991. They had defeated their long-time rivals Detroit Pistons in the Conference finals, to face the legendary Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers team led by Magic Johnson was the team to beat to be the best in the league.

During the final series, Byron Scott, playing for the mighty Lakers, commented on certain plays by Jordan. The Bulls no 23, years later, commented on how he actually felt by Byron Scott’s comments.

Michael Jordan on Byron Scott’s comments

Michael Jordan was on a roll in 1991 and the Chicago Bulls steamrolled the Detroit Pistons to reach the Finals of the NBA 1990-91 season. This was it according to Jordan, as he wanted to defeat the best in the league to be the best in the league. The Los Angeles Lakers with Magic Johnson were a powerhouse in the 80s. The Lakers at that point were a part of nine NBA finals in the last 12 years.

The Chicago Bulls no. 23 was ready for the challenge to begin and an opponent commented on Jordan and the Bulls after the second game. Byron Scott, of the LA Lakers, called Jordan’s classic move ‘The Move’ “showboating”. 

Back in 2013, while talking to Ahmad Rashad, Jordan explained how he felt about that. When I did that, Byron Scott said we were ‘showboating’ at the end of the game. That you know we were winning and then we were showboating. And I never looked at it that way, but he did,” the Bulls legend said.

We never thought we could lose after that,” he added.

And he and the Chicago Bulls never did. They steamrolled through oppositions and dominated the whole decade of the 1990s. Winning 6 of the 10 Championships, an winning two three-peats in the whole decade.

Jordan and the Bulls’ legacy

Jordan never faltered with the Bulls after that season. The Bulls legend averaged 30.3 PPG, 4.9 APG, 6.2 RPG since the 1990-91 season. It was impossible to stop the Bulls’ no. 23 after that.

Michael Jordan retired temporarily in the 1994-95 season due to personal tragedies and a lack of will to play the game. But returned the next season to start the second chapter of his legacy.
