Various sources have cited that inmates go to any extent so as to dodge serving their sentence in the penal colony. Gelena Alekseyeva served a part of her sentence in the IK-14 prison which is located in Mordovia. The IK-2 penal colony, where Griner will be serving, is also located in the same region.

During an interview in 2019, Alekseyeva revealed horrific details about the workings of the prison. She said, “There is nothing more dear to the inmates than these kittens and cats. But they can also be used for punishment. So, if you sewed badly today then we will burn the cats! They don’t punish one or two people — they punish a whole brigade.”
