When it comes to the most iconic teams in NBA history, no list can be complete without the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers. One of the most exciting talents, Magic Johnson was the heart of the franchise. His no-look dimes and charismatic persona had the fans flooding the arena. In addition, Dr. Jerry Buss transformed the game into an entertaining experience with the introduction of the Laker girls. The tandem also shared a great relationship off the floor. Likewise, in 1981, Buss rewarded the young Magic with what was then considered the most expensive deal in league history. The Hall of Famer signed a $25 million extension for 25 years. However, this decision nearly led to the Purple and Gold losing out on star center, Kareem-Abdul Jabbar.

Kareem was arguably the most unstoppable weapon in basketball. The six-time MVP had the ‘skyhook’ in his arsenal, a shot no one could figure out. Without his presence, Magic Johnson and the Lakers probably wouldn’t have ascended to five championships. The former all-time scoring champion only had one objective, to win.

Likewise, he wanted the Lakers to follow his ferocity to win a title. However, during the time Johnson signed his deal, the great center felt a disconnect from the more giant objective. That is when the trade rumors started to flow in.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar nearly asked for a trade after Magic Johnson’s luxurious deal with the Lakers

In 1981, the UPI followed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during the time trade rumors were attached to his name. The six-time champion met up with boss Jerry Buss to discuss the franchise’s direction. Notably, the Hall of Famer had no problems with Magic Johnson’s new contract. However, he did feel the special treatment of one person will disturb the unity of the group. After a long meeting with Buss, Kareem was reassured about the Lakers’ chase for titles.

According to UPI, the Lakers center spoke about the meeting and said, “I have always had an intense desire to win, but the atmosphere here had not been conducive toward that goal. His decision to stay with the Lakers saw the tandem dominate the 1980s decade. They won a championship in the very season Kareem contemplated a trade. But that wasn’t all. The great dynasty rose their tally to five after winning in 1985, 1987, and 1988. The dominant Lakers center led the franchise in scoring for 11 straight seasons, a club record.

Moreover, after Magic Johnson, even Kareem Abdul Jabbar got paid. His payment went up to 1.5 million in 1984. In his final season with the Lakers, the 7’2″ legendary center was reportedly making $3 million, the most for any team sport at that time.
