Will Smith recently made an appearance on the ‘All the Smoke‘ podcast, hosted by Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. The four-time Grammy-winning actor talked about his journey to becoming a multi-faceted artist. Apart from his invaluable contributions to Hollywood, Will Smith also was the first hip-hop artist to win the Grammy award for Best Rap Performance in 1989.

Will Smith and other rappers boycotted the Grammys in 1989
During the podcast, Smith shared that they decided to boycott the 1989 Grammy Awards as the organizers decided to skip their category from the television broadcast. As a result, Smith and his rapper parties decided to have a boycott party.

The 54-year-old recently revealed the details of the boycott party to former NBA stars Barnes and Jackson. Barnes asked Smith how he felt when he became the first rapper to win the Grammy award. Smith revealed that NARAS, the Grammy organizers, decided not to televise the best rap category during the first year. As a result, all the rappers including Smith decided to boycott the ceremony.

Will Smith continued, “So we had a boycott party. I was just talking to Chuck D and Chuck D had the line, ‘Who gives a f**k about a goddamn Grammy.'”

Smith further disclosed that after Chuck D’s profound announcement he could hear his name being announced. As a result, the veteran actor couldn’t help but disagree with the sentiment at that moment.

Meanwhile, Smith also talked about the roles and characters that were close to his heart. He made a statement about tennis legend Serena Williams’ father and how his personality had been portrayed inaccurately by the media. The 54-year-old actor won the Best Actor award at the Oscars for playing Richard Williams’ character earlier this year.
Will Smith’s hip-hop group
Back in the day, Will Smith was part of the hip-hop group DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince along with Jeff Townes. The rap duo were active between 1986 and 1994 and won two Grammy awards in 1989 and 1991.

Smith won his first Grammy for their popular 1988 song ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand.’ Moreover, he won a second Grammy in 1991 for ‘Summertime’, which reached number 4 on the Billboard 100 list.
