Joel Embiid has turned himself into one of the leading offensive players in the league. Moreover, he is also one to play the game of trash talk. He brings out his best against the top players and always brings in the theatrics. Recently, while speaking with JJ Reddick, Embiid explained why he is not a fan of Patrick Beverley and his constant trash talk during the game.
Beverley is one of the leading trash talkers in the NBA. He takes pride in playing hard-nosed defense and does the dirty work for his side. However, his numbers are never one that catches the eye. Beverley is a solid role player, but often isn’t able to handle the best as a defensive assignment. In addition, he isn’t a difference-maker on the offensive end either.

While in talks on the Old Man and the Three podcast, Embiid explained why he wasn’t for Beverley doing the trash-talking as the guard can’t back it up on the court.

While on the podcast, Embiid was talking about his own trash talking. He said becoming a dad changed the way he looked at it. Embiid explained only a few players can ring that side out of him. The big man proceeded to name a few players who are the best trash talkers naming Draymond Green, Kevin Durant. However, he soon dug into why he doesn’t like Beverley doing the talking because the Minnesota guard doesn’t back it up.
He said: “The way I look at trash talk is like, you got to back it up. Like I mention one name, no disrespect.” Embiid continued saying, “To me, it just feels weird to be in a position like you always talking trash non-stop, but like, are you going to back it up?”

While there is some element that is right, Beverley has made a name for himself by getting into players’ heads. He is always the one leading the mind games when on the floor and getting in the faces of the biggest stars. When it comes to his production, Beverley only averages 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Hence, Embiid does hold a point on his impact with the basketball. But Patrick Beverley has always been the one who sets the tone without the basketball in his hand. And as someone who tries to do anything to disrupt the mindset, trash talk is inevitable.
On the other hand, Embiid stands by his own principles. The Philly center is one of the most fun players to watch in the NBA. He brings in different energy and also trash talks. However, he puts up numbers on both ends. The top MVP candidate is putting up 30 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal and block each. Hence, trash talk or not, Embiid is always going to bring out his best when on the floor.

To sum it up, trash talk is just part of the spirit of basketball. While Beverley and Embiid have different roles to fulfill, they both use the element to gain the upper hand on their rivals.
