The 2022 Academy Awards will be remembered not for any achievements in film or enhancing or celebrating talent, but for what Will Smith and Chris Rock did on stage. The retaliation that Will took because Chris made a joke about his wife sent shock waves across industries. 

As that response was not the only thing that came out of it. According to many, retorting to violence was not the answer, and absolutely unnecessary. Quite a few people came forward to speak about this event that took place on Oscar’s stage.

As it was the Oscars, millions of fans were watching it and Will’s response clearly opened the mouths of many fans as well as celebrities. The list of people also includes some well-known basketball players. One NBA legend described it as “slapping women”. Besides smacking Chris’s face, Smith also said, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth,” twice as he returned to the seat.

The opinions of some may differ as some deemed it unacceptable in such an event, while others declared it as standing up for his better half. If we look closely, however, it raises a question as to whether Jada Pinkett Smith, Will’s wife, can defend herself if such a thing occurs.

Jada has never shied away from speaking the truth and standing for what she believes. Yet this time, the situation seemed a bit different. Possibly this was not the case, but it would have been better if Will hadn’t made the mistakes he did at the stage.

In response, Abdul-Jabbar explains: “Actually, it was the opposite. Smith’s slap was also a slap at women. If Rock had physically attacked Pinkett Smith, Smith’s intervention would have been welcome. Or if he’d remained in his seat and yelled his post-slap threat, that would have been unnecessary, but understandable. But by hitting Rock, he announced that his wife was incapable of defending herself—against words.”
