The battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles had hearts racing the entire night. At the end of the day, Patrick Mahomes’ astounding heroics led to his second title. Likewise, the biggest football league on the planet wrote yet another successful chapter. However, it seems their goodwill is quickly dropping off after major unravelings by former players. Writing in his Substack, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar blasted the NFL for its poor conduct regarding stars who put their bodies on the line for entertainment.

Many others suffer severe physical and mental impairments post-career in the NFL. To protect such athletes, the league gives out disability payments to those who qualify. However, a group of former stars is suing the league with proof of mismanagement in terms of disability pay. Grave accusations are up against the NFL for denying payments to injured athletes. Reacting to the lawsuit, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar stood by the players.

A group of 10 NFL players has filed a lawsuit against the league for its mismanagement of disability pay. A list that includes former star Willis McGahee has lined up some disturbing practices of the league. The plaintiffs are accusing the league of keeping doctors on payrolls and passing incorrect reports to deny claims. In just McGahee’s case, doctors denied any impaired cognitive function while other medical professionals presented it in their reports. Likewise, as an advocate for justice, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was disgusted.

In his Substack, the Hall of Famer wrote, “The NFL is representative of the worst of business practices: inherent racism in hiring coaches, malicious neglect in protecting players from repeated serious injuries, and now cheating them out disability pay.”

As an athlete, Abdul-Jabbar is well aware of the risks. The six-time champion had a long career in the NBA. Playing in the ruthless physicality era, the legendary figure arguably took many bangs. However, when it comes to the NFL, the scales are completely different. The damages suffered by NFL players far exceed any other sport. Broken bones and severe mental injuries aren’t uncommon. Moreover, Players step on the field knowing the entire opposition is willing to run over them just to get a score on the board. That is the major reason the disability pay was put together by the league. The claim ranges from $65000 to $26500 a year. NFL commissioner Roger Goodall commented on the situation in a recent press conference. As a defendant in the lawsuit, he claims the final decisions depend on the doctors and the joint board. In two similar cases before, the federal judge has held the NFL accountable. But it seems their practices might still be persistent. And Kareem wants the fans to support the players in their fight.
