“I’ll Get My 14th Championship Ring”: Lakers Legend Magic Johnson After $100 Million Investment Sets Into Motion

Los Angeles Football Club(LAFC) has signed a new naming rights deal after their previous deal fell through. The city of Los Angeles has two basketball teams, and the same goes for soccer as well. L.A. Galaxy’s rivals, LAFC recently had an official press conference to announce the name change for their stadium after striking a new deal, causing Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson to have optimistic expectations for the future.

The stadium of LAFC is also home to the Angel City Football Club, the women’s soccer team of Los Angeles. After the deal between LAFC and their previous naming rights partner, Banc of California was cut short, the franchise struck a new deal with the Bank of Montreal.

Magic Johnson announced a new deal and another championship ring

Recently, Magic Johnson posted an update of the press conference for the new naming rights partner on Twitter. He tweeted, “Today my @LAFC & @weareangelcity ownership partners and I including Larry Berg, Bennett Rosenthal, Brandon Beck & Mia Hamm, celebrated the new stadium naming rights partner BMO Financial Group!”

“It was an electric, fun, and exciting press conference at the newly named @BMOStadium!” He followed this tweet with another claiming, “@LAFC opens the stadium with a home game against Portland tomorrow and I’ll get my 14th Championship ring!”

The previous deal that was signed with the Banc of California was a 15-year $100 million deal back in 2016. However, the deal was called off in 2020. This caused the Banc of California to pay $20 million for an early exit from their deal.

According to a report by ‘FrontOffice Sports’, the new deal between LAFC and Bank of Montreal was signed for $100 million for 10 years. Moreover, this made it a record-breaking deal at the time it was announced on January 21, 2023.

A look at all of Johnson’s championship rings

For those of you who do not know, Magic Johnson has a total of 13 championship rings on his resume. He won five NBA championships during his illustrious 13-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Then he won another five as a minority owner of the Lakers. Magic then won a ring with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an owner. He followed that up with a WNBA championship with the Los Angeles Sparks.

He won his most recent championship with LAFC. And now, Johnson is optimistic that LAFC will be winning another one as they open the season with a home game against Portland.
