Most often than not famous personalities hesitate to voice out their opinion. From online backlash to losing out on endorsement deals, they supposedly have a lot at stake. In one chapter of his book, ‘Who’s Afraid of a Large Black Man,’ Charles Barkley addresses the same. The 11-time NBA All-Star released his book in 2005. In which,  he has addressed topics that are considered to be taboo and controversial.

The motivation behind writing this book was that Barkley had realized and acknowledged his privilege in society. He realized that with his influence and status, he can get people to have conversations about certain issues. He has also included conversations that he had with personalities like Morgan Freeman, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Tiger Woods amongst others.

In his book, Charles Barkley mentioned that he always strives to say or do what he believes in the most. Not concerning himself with offending anyone. He focuses on being true to the audience while ensuring to convey his personal opinion. Barkley pointed out that when celebrities are diplomatic about an issue, the impression it creates on fans is that, “I’m more worried about my endorsements and my money than I am about doing something.” ‘

While addressing the same, Barkley called out golfing legend Tiger Woods and 6-time NBA champion Michael Jordan. He believed that this legendary duo play it safe. He urged them to speak their minds and be bold with their approach to issues of social and cultural importance. Barkley said, “Both of those guys have a half billion dollars. They could afford whatever financial hit their image might take.” 

His advice to them focused on how negative publicity will always be a part of their lives, regardless of what they say or don’t. He said, “They might as well be their own man their own person.”

Barkley wants celebrities and people, in general, to simply voice out their opinions. With that said, he also is aware that he may not be right all time, but this doesn’t stop him from talking because, for Barkley, conversations lead to the process of change.
