Not even time can heal the pain of failing, but a comeback can. So having multiple fronts to play on is an advantage, as you may just win on one even if you keep losing on the other. NBA icon, Magic Johnson is experiencing a similar situation. His two different fronts are his NFL and MLB teams, the Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Dodgers, respectively. Notably, Commanders had a rough 2023 season. “We got our **s kicked”, a comment once made by DE Jonathan Allen summed it all up. However, the Dodgers have in some sense brought relief for Johnson.

They registered a 2-5 victory against the San Diego Padres. The team’s part-owner Magic Johnson has expressed his happiness about how his team started the 2024 Major League Baseball season. “5-2 opening victory for the Dodgers in South Korea over the Padres! Shohei Otani and Mookie Betts led with 2 hits a piece and Glasnow pitched great, only allowing 2 hits. The men in blue are off to a great start,” he posted on X.

It is worth mentioning that Shohei Ohtani managed 5 at-bats, 2 hits, and 1 RBI during the game. Meanwhile, Mookie Betts had 4 at-bats, 2 hits, and 1 RBI. This was a much-needed win for Magic Johnson and his confidence in sports franchise ownership after the Commanders’ recent failed run. Notably, he is the co-owner of Commanders as well.

Commanders did not just lose 13 of the 17 matches but closed the season with a losing streak of 8 games. Johnson had seemingly given up hope in October itself after their heavy loss to the NY Giants. “Disappointing 14-7 loss for my Commanders to the NY Giants. It’s hard to win in the NFL when you only score 7 points,” he posted. It is important to highlight this is just one, among the series of tweets he posted during the regular season in frustration.

Ending with an embarrassing 38-10 scoreline against wasn’t easy. It is said that for 4 years, HC, Ron Rivera had the final say over football and personnel decisions. The fans eventually held Rivera responsible for the team’s disastrous season. Subsequently, the Commanders fired him on January 8. “Ron helped navigate this organization through some challenging times. He is a good man and thoughtful leader who has positively contributed to this organization and the NFL,” Commanders’ co-owner Josh Harris said in a statement after the decision.

Why Did Magic Johnson Choose the Washington Commanders and Not One of His Hometown Teams Chargers or Rams

Ron reciprocated by stating, “As for Washington, it wasn’t easy and there is a lot more to be done, but I believe we began to change the culture of this organization in meaningful ways.” He even mentioned his duration with the Commanders as one of his greatest honors. Now, there are speculations around roster changes for the 2024 NFL season. Only Terry McLaurin and Daron Payne are the two players confirmed to not leave because of their contractual obligations.
