Is there a reckoning coming for Adam Silver’s NBA? For a long time, rapper Ice Cube has voiced his displeasure over the NBA commissioner’s lack of support for his 3-on-3 basketball league. Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius Erving, who has been part of the league as a coach and has the championship trophy named after him, has also expressed his concerns on the matter. Years after Ice Cube’s plea, Dr. J made a request to Commissioner Silver.

While speaking about the league on The Mark Jackson Show, the 76ers legend shared his belief that the NBA might be “hating” on the league. He assumed that the reason could be because of the timing of the Big 3 that clashes with another NBA property, the WNBA.

NBA is kind of hating on the Big 3 because it runs the same time as the WNBA, and the WNBA is an NBA property, and Big 3, you know, it’s founded by Ice Cube,Dr. J said on the podcast. The WNBA season, which runs from mid-May to mid-October, clashes with Big3 on the calendar as Ice Cube’s league runs from mid-June to mid-August. While the WNBA has seen a considerable growth this year, it might have come at some cost of Big3’s development.

The 74-year-old further urged Commissioner Silver to recognize that the Big3 offers a great opportunity for basketball to find a global platform. He believes that rather than harboring a feeling of competition, the commissioner should begin to show support for the league. The 11x NBA All-Star hopes that Silver will see the potential in the league.

He added, “Hopefully you know Adam can change his mind about how he feels about the Big Three.” Julius Erving’s sentiment has also also echoed by the founder Ice Cube over the years.
