A vitriolic court battle saw the pair divorce in 2010 as D-Wade was granted sole custody of their 2 kids in 2011. The decision was a huge win for the 3x champion as he was reunited with his sons after being denied that privilege by his ex-wife.

In an interview reported by ESPN, the 2006 Finals MVP told the American Press that he had been “preparing” for the verdict for over a year. Speaking about it, he stated, “My life changed in a huge way. Mentally, I’ve been preparing for it for over a year now.”

Revealing that it was much bigger than just getting sole custody, Wade explained. “For me, it shows a lot of people that you need to fight to be in your kids’ lives sometimes.” Going on to reiterate the same point, he continued, “You fight until you can’t fight anymore. That’s all I was trying to be, a father in his kids’ lives.”
