Charles Barkley has never shied away from voicing his opinions, and his disdain for ESPN has been a recurring theme. Throughout the saga surrounding the NBA’s media rights deal, Barkley didn’t hold back, even taking shots at his bosses at TNT, calling them “clowns” and “fools.” This was during the period of uncertainty when Barkley flirted with retirement before ultimately deciding to extend his contract with TNT. His decision to stay was driven by a selfless motive: ensuring the “Inside the NBA” staff continued to get paid.

Now, however, the 76ers legend has hinted at the possibility of moving on from his long-standing role at TNT. Surprisingly, Barkley has suggested that he might even look past his issues with ESPN if it came to that. His recent comments have left fans and industry insiders speculating about his future.

Who will be the first to break away from the fan-favorite show?

In a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Charles Barkley revealed that despite agreeing to a contract extension with TNT, he’s actively exploring other opportunities. Barkley has criticized Ted Turner for excluding the show’s biggest stars from crucial discussions, even after the crew went to great lengths to support the network’s bid for the NBA package, including meeting with sponsors in New York.

Owing to this, Barkley shared that he’s currently in discussions with NBC and Amazon, wanting to evaluate all his options before making a final decision. “I’m listening to NBC, Amazon. I want to know everything that’s on the table for me before I sign in,” Barkley said. Surprisingly, he also left the door open for a potential move to ESPN, a network he’s criticized in the past.

“I love those guys at ESPN, and if we end up there, I’m gonna do the best I possibly can,” he added. One key reason Barkley hasn’t fully committed yet is the lack of clarity surrounding his schedule. “First of all, they haven’t even given us any type of schedule, whatsoever,” he noted. However, Barkley also echoed host Dan Patrick’s thoughts about ESPN’s workload, which he’s unwilling to endure at this stage of his career. Financially secure, Barkley has made it clear he’d be happy to walk away and retire if necessary.

However, his concerns about being left in the dark regarding his future echo a situation his Inside the NBA co-host, Shaquille O’Neal can face shortly. O’Neal’s contract situation stands apart from his Inside the NBA co-hosts. Unlike Barkley, Shaq isn’t involved in Turner Sports’ March Madness or golf coverage. Although he signed an extension in 2022 alongside the rest of the crew, his contract is set to expire in July 2025. With Inside the NBA poised to move to ESPN following the NBA’s new media rights deal, TNT must negotiate a new agreement to keep O’Neal on board.

According to reports, Shaq has expressed frustration over the uncertainty surrounding his future. The marketing for next season is already underway, yet there’s been no clarity on what lies ahead for him. This echoes the broader dissatisfaction Charles Barkley voiced about Turner Sports’ handling of the NBA media rights deal, which kept the Inside the NBA team entirely in the dark.

This lack of communication has also become a sore point for O’Neal. Despite his significance to the program, Turner has yet to address his contract situation directly with him, leaving one of their marquee talents uncertain about his role in the coming years.

The future might be bleak but it’s not all doom and gloom

This season of Inside the NBA has already delivered its share of unforgettable moments. From Shaquille O’Neal hilariously breaking the LED board during a mock dunk to Kenny Smith losing a free-throw challenge to Stephen A. Smith, the crew continues to bring high-energy antics and their signature quick wit.

Adding to the season’s excitement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently announced a groundbreaking new All-Star format featuring four teams. Three of the teams will be drafted by none other than Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith, who will serve as honorary General Managers for their respective squads.

But with Barkley’s future uncertain and O’Neal’s contract set to expire in 2025, fans are left wondering if this is truly the end for the legendary duo. Could this be their swan song, or will there be a way for Barkley to negotiate a new deal? And with Shaq’s contract still unresolved, will the two decide to exit together? Share your thoughts—because no matter what happens next, one thing is clear: their chemistry and impact on the show will be irreplaceable.
