A single ring to his name, but Alonzo Mourning is much more of a champion beyond the court. The champion of working towards a greater cause. His contributions to the community in giving back to the underprivileged have been quite notable in Miami. And this time he has joined hands with his former team in the city to bring an early Christmas joy to the kids in need.

In a series of photos shared on Instagram, Mourning and fellow NBA legend Glen Rice were seen spreading holiday joy, handing out toys and basketballs to children at Jesse McCrary Elementary School. The occasion? The 17th Annual Larry Share Family holiday gift distribution.

“Proud to be a part of an organization that’s always in the Christmas spirit,” Mourning wrote in his post. If that doesn’t inspire you, his call to action might. He urged everyone to use their blessings to make a difference this holiday season. A reminder that no matter how big or small, every act of kindness counts.

Those who’ve followed Mourning beyond his basketball career would know this generosity is nothing new. It was earlier this year itself that he once again proved his dedication to uplifting communities through his work with the Overtown Youth Center (OYC Miami).

Located in Miami’s historic African American district, this non-profit organization has been transforming lives for two decades, offering education and support to families—completely free of charge.

“It’s a beacon of hope in the Overtown community,” Mourning told EBONY. Now imagine the impact of such an initiative over 20 years. To celebrate this milestone, Zo and his wife hosted a star-studded event featuring Dwyane Wade, Pat Riley, and even a live performance by Ne-Yo. But he went even bigger with the services a year ago.

The time when Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning joined forces to improve youth center in Miami

O’Neal and Mourning, once teammates who brought Miami its first NBA title in 2006, came together again in 2022. But this time, the goal wasn’t on the court. Instead, they teamed up to bring new life to the Overtown Youth Center in Miami as part of a $20 million project that witnessed the addition of a charter school to the facility.

The contribution on Big Diesel’s end came through the Shaquille O’Neal Foundation and Icy Hot’s Comebaq Courts initiative, launched in 2021 to restore basketball courts in underserved communities. After similar successes in Las Vegas and Newark, New Jersey, they turned their focus to Miami.

Mourning, who founded the youth center in 2003, expanded the space from 18,000 to a staggering 56,000 square feet, creating a hub that could welcome up to 2,000 people at any given time. The best part? All services are free. Thanks to corporate partnerships.

As Mourning puts it, “My responsibility is to use the blessings I was given to bless other people.” A message that he sent out to others as well this holiday season.
