What happens when high fashion meets high drama? Context? Teyana Taylor turned heads at the 2025 Met Gala with a striking dandy look as she stepped onto the floral carpet. Styled by Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, the singer stunned in a custom pinstripe suit paired with a dramatic padded cape. But while her fashion made headlines, so did the events behind the scenes. Teyana Taylor may have owned the Met Gala carpet, but behind the glamor, a legal storm with ex-husband Iman Shumpert was brewing. On May 5, her ex-husband and former NBA player Iman Shumpert reportedly filed a motion against her. Amidst the legal chaos, the singer made a rare appearance after the Met Gala. 

The hottest couple, Shumpert and Taylor, were married in October 2016. After the singer filed for divorce in 2023, the two had been involved in a legal battle over property and child support payments. It escalated when the singer noticed fake details of their divorce settlement were published online. The singer accused Shumpert of leaking the details to promote his new single release. The former NBA player denied the allegations. And tit-for-tat, just five days ago, In Touch revealed that Shumpert now demanded similar punishment for Taylor as she had previously sought against him in his motion.

While Taylor has maintained silence and yet to make a comment, she stopped by for the star-studded 2025 Disney Upfront, held at the Javits Center in New York City. The GoodMorningAmerica page posted, “Whether she’s at the #MetGala or the @Disney Upfronts, @teyanataylor’s outfits always EAT 🔥😍”
She was present for Ryan Murphy’s new legal drama, All’s Fair. Other cast members, including Glenn Close, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Sarah Paulson, also joined Taylor. For the night, she wore a cool, entire denim outfit with giant golden buttons elevating the look. 

Taylor flaunted the same power look for the Met Gala. While her ex-husband had praised her look in 2024, the sentiment was different this year. As per In Touch, Shumpert reportedly accused Taylor of breaching their agreement. He claimed that she had shared certain details from their divorce settlement and which damaged his reputation, and he suffered a loss of income. The former New York Knicks player also accused Teyana of speaking ill of him in front of their kids. 

Iman urged the court to have Teyana be fined $1,000 and imprisoned for up to 20 days. As said before, these are the same claims that the singer made earlier. However, later in an IG video, Teyana clarified that she never wanted Shumpert to be jailed. The legal battle has taken a more ugly turn, while Shumpert might find some peace getting praised by his former teammate for his lesser-known talent.

When the Knicks made a deal to have Melo on board, Shumpert was also selected by the team as the 17th overall pick. So, Melo was with him right from the beginning. Even back then, Melo liked how, as a rookie, Shumpert was never hesitant to put his thoughts out. He was being himself and unique. The former NBA player, who still shares a great friendship with his former teammate, revealed how the retired player was mistaken by others and even used to get ridiculed for the same.

“He got ridiculed for being that in the locker room on the bus with the headphones music loud doing in his own world, rapping out loud. He got persecuted for being and doing that ‘he’s not serious he’s not this; It comes a point in time where you had to we had to be like “Oh s-– that’s enough Champ,’ Like dumb it down a little bit,” Melo said on 7PM in Brooklyn. 

He had massive praise for the NBA champ. Over the years playing for the Knicks, the two had built a strong bond. Just a few weeks ago, the former NBA player invited Shumpert on his podcast, too. Looking back at their playing days together, Melo recalled being furious after the Knicks traded both Iman and J.R. Smith away to the Cavaliers.

It has been a while since Iman Shumpert last geared up for a pro game, which was way back in 2020–21. And two years later, the divorce drama began. While the divorce might be finalized, the legal battle is clearly far from over.
