Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, recently grabbed headlines with his claimed $100 million-worth new project. The design and building of a 5,000-square-foot underground bunker at his Hawaii property is the core initiative of this venture. The bunker’s living quarters, mechanical room, and escape hatch are an integral component of its disaster-proof design.

Shaquille O’Neal and Mark Zuckerberg in doomsday preparations

Shaquille O’Neal, a former NBA star noted for his powerful presence on the court and his current conscientious commitment to personal security, is accompanying Zuckerberg in his preparations. O’Neal has invested in the development of safe rooms or doomsday bunkers, along with other personalities like Kim Kardashian and Tom Cruise, highlighting an increasing desire among the rich to protect themselves from any dangers. There also seem to be bunkers underground in Bill Gates’ residences.

The remodeling projects that Zuckerberg and other wealthy people have embarked on demonstrate the extent to which affluent people will go to protect themselves and their loved ones in an increasingly unpredictable environment. The rising prevalence of elites making doomsday preparations raises concerns about inequality in access to safety and security measures as well as the future.

“In an apartment, you don’t have a lot of space to just dedicate to the safe room,” Pollack explains. “So, we’ll do them in the master closet where there’s enough room to store food and water and there’s a bathroom there in the closet potentially. And the family could go in there for a short period of time.” Pollack modified a master bathroom and two closets into a 300-square-foot haven with specific ventilation and facilities for nutrition in a duplex flat on Central Park West.

Douglas Elliman broker Bruce Ehrmann tells the story of assisting an oligarch to acquire a Manhattan property that had a fancy safe room. Furnished “like a living room,” it had self-contained utilities and bulletproof features, illustrating the opulent yet realistic method some people took to defend their living areas. For the wealthy, safety and security are top priorities, even when they are in the middle of the city.
