The basketball legend, Dennis Rodman, known for his great rebounds, was equally famous for his flashy lifestyle. In his prime, no other NBA athlete could come near his on-court persona and popularity. According to Rodman’s former colleague and the legendary NBA player Isiah Thomas, in a new interview on ‘NBA Open Court’, it was the culture within the Chicago Bulls organization that made Rodman more casual. According to Thomas, during his time with the Detroit Pistons, a team noted for high standards and rigor, his professionalism reached its peak.

Thomas and Rodman’s Unbreakable Bond

Interestingly, although Isiah Thomas jokingly accused the Bulls of having something to do with Rodman’s change, there is more to this than meets the eye. Thomas and Rodman are the players who shared the court with the ‘Bad Boy’ Pistons earning them two league titles. This formed a strong connection between them on the court.

The camaraderie between the players was so strong that even when Rodman made controversial remarks and said, “Larry Bird had been awarded the MVP award only because he was white”, Thomas supported his teammates. Thomas said that Bird was merely another player.

The media gave a lot of attention to this episode, with Thomas being branded a racist. In return for the public outrage, the thirteen-time All-Star issued a genuine apology. However, this did not stop Thomas from supporting Rodman. He also mentioned all the efforts made to secure his position despite the controversy.

Despite trying times that almost tore them apart, they managed to maintain their friendship and togetherness which extended beyond the court.

From Suits to Vegas Nights – The Rodman Transformation

Seven-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas passionately defended his case on his ‘NBA Open Court’ show. He highlighted the cultural differences between the Pistons and the Bulls. As per Thomas, the Pistons had a culture of professionalism, which demanded that players wore suits and ties at matches and catered to all aspects of their welfare from improved travel to lavish hotels. Such was a culture for perfection and attention to the finest detail.

While this was correct till Rodman joined the Chicago Bulls, things changed eventually. The Bulls were very much a laid-back and partying crowd with pre-game trips down to Vegas and partying with celebrities such as Madonna. Thomas also noted the amazing metamorphosis in Rodman’s way of life in a jocular manner, ending with a sarcastic crack about Rodman’s future diplomatic endeavors in Korea.
