Being put under the microscope is part of the journey of a basketball star. Bronny James is currently going through the same drill. Despite a high level of expectation set on him, Bronny so far has given very few reasons to discard him as a top prospect. However, there is one weakness that Gilbert Arenas sees in him, which he believes runs in the family. No, it’s not a flaw in his game or a weakness that makes Bronny any less of a player. In fact, it’s not even a critique if you focus on the words of Arenas.

Arenas has watched Bronny play and has trained him for a while on LeBron James‘ special request. So it is fair to assume that he knows what he is talking about. Arenas said, The only thing he[LeBron James] has to worry about is him playing the right way. Bronny playing the right way takes away from what’s inside of him. And I think that’s what’s holding him back.”

This came up after Arenas claimed that Bronny plays too nice. He said, “He follows rules. He don’t wanna jaywalk…when it’s time to say, Man, fu*k the rest of these players, I gotta go put the…he’s gonna still believe in his teammates. When sometimes you can’t.”

Bronny has a good boy image which doesn’t seem manufactured if you’ve heard LeBron’s take on parenting. The 4x NBA champion believes in leading by example instead of preaching good behavior to his kids. During a 2019 interview, he said, “It’s how you walk, it’s how you get up, it’s how you respect people in your household…we’re just trying to set a great example not only in the household but when you leave the household.”

Despite being in the league for over two decades, LeBron has maintained a clean image on and off the court. So it’s obvious that the kids will also pick up on it and live their lives the same way. Bronny’s reputation is the perfect testament to that.

Is Bronny James too well-behaved to be great in this sport?

To play any professional sport at the highest level, one needs to take control in their own hands from time to time. This tendency is often labeled as being selfish, but as long as it gets the result, nobody is going to have an issue with it. In the case of Bronny, at least based on Arenas’ assessment, he is too attached to the textbook definition of being an athlete.

Arenas has had this opinion about him for a long time. The 3x All-Star previously said, “He has the Bugatti engine, but he wants to drive the speed limit. He don’t want a ticket. ‘I don’t want a ticket.’ That’s how he uses his body.”

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing that Bronny remains a team player even when the times are tough. In addition to that, there are different kinds of players, playing the same sport at the same time. So whatever Arenas might make of Bronny’s game, it’s his perspective. Whether Bronny and his father will feel the need for a change over it or not, only time will tell.
