Beating death, Scot Pollard’s recovery over the years

Just over a year ago, this moment seemed impossible. Pollard was stuck in bed, weak, and could barely walk. “I did not realize how sick I was,” he said. “To wake up from a transplant of this magnitude and feel better, woah, I was sick.” Doctors told him he needed two miracles…a donor and one with a heart big enough. “A big heart became available wouldn’t fit anybody else,” Pollard said. “All I know is it was a big man.” That big man was Casey.

Pollard got the transplant at Vanderbilt Medical Center on February 16, just four days after his 50th birthday. “It’s the best present I’ve ever received,” he said with a smile. His recovery has been amazing, even surprising doctors with how fast he got better. “They don’t let many people out after two weeks,” he said.

Now he is using his voice to raise awareness about organ donation. He recently spoke at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and got a standing ovation. That night, the Celtics gave him a shout-out at a playoff game. “I know I’m fortunate,” he said. “It was good fortune for me… but I never forget the loss behind it.”

Pollard may have left the NBA, but at the Indy 500, he showed the world that his biggest win came after the buzzer.
