Who is the greatest point guard ever? For the longest time, Magic Johnson held that record undisputedly. But since the emergence of Stephen Curry, this has become a hot topic. Some might give the Warriors superstar the edge because of his championship runs, and his recent Olympics performance. But it’s not easy after all. That is why former Lakers star Byron Scott gave a key reason about the two point guards. And how they truly changed the game.

Steph comes out, he’s a point guard. And as we knew back in those days, point guards were guys who were facilitators. They passed the ball. This guy is one of the greatest shooters, if not the greatest that we’ve ever seen. So he’s changed that point guard position into a shooting mentality, point guard, a scoring mentality.” On his podcast, the 3x NBA Champion credited Curry for being a shooter first point guard, which has resulted in 3,868 3-pointers. The Warriors icon also overpowers Johnson by about 5 points in scoring average.

However, that is just Stephen Curry. The Lakers legend had his own effect Scott elaborates on.

I think he (Curry) is. I think he will go down as one of the greatest point guards we’ve ever seen and a guy who changed the game, just like Magic. When Magic came in the game, there was no 6’9″ point guards. So he changed the whole way the point guard position was played. Steph comes along, he changes it also, because now at 6’9″ Magic is a straight facilitator. He’s getting everybody involved.” Scott pointed out that his former teammate believed in being a facilitator for his team. That is why he has more assists in fewer games.

Magic Johnson ended his career with 10,141 assists in 906 games. Meanwhile, as per basketball reference, Curry has only 6,301 assists that too in 986 games. That is why the Lakers legend also holds being the assist leader 4 times in his career. And just like Byron Scott stated via the FastBreak podcast, Chef Curry has two scoring titles to his name, signifying his different game style. But what does the 5x NBA Champion feel about the comparison?

Magic Johnson has challenged Stephen Curry in order to determine the clear winner

On his podcast, Byron Scott ended the debate between the two with a question for the future. Interestingly, it is the same question that the Michigan State alum had asked Curry– “it all comes down to how many championships did you win?

Magic Johnson made clear his position between the two and left a list for the Warriors superstar to fulfill. “If he’s got more than 5 championships, more than 3 Finals MVPs, 3 league MVPs, #1 assists all-time in the Finals then he’s the greatest… but the last time I checked, he doesn’t.”  Well, Steph Curry is not that far behind. At least he has 4 championships and two league MVPs, along with his one Finals MVP.

Whether he achieves it before he retires will be a question for many. Although some feel he has done enough to dislodge Magic Johnson from the top spot. Do you feel the same?
