Shaq responded profoundly to this concern. He was asked “Dr O’Neal what’s your advice for a woman who has raised all of her children as a single parent? And now that they’re older I’m ready to travel and explore the world should I go I need advice.”

Right after hearing the question, Shaq responded directly with a Yes.

“You know, there’s an old saying: never forget where you come from,” O’Neal said. “And my professional career started here. I’ve been living here mostly all my life. The fans have been hospitable. The people have been very, very hospitable. I never thought this day would happen.”

The Magic picked O’Neal with the first pick in the 1992 draft. They have never taken away a player’s number before but thought this would be a good time to do it during their anniversary period.

The Los Angeles Lakers retired Shaq’s No. 34 shirt, and the Miami Heat retired his No. 32 jersey. He became the third player, after Wilt Chamberlain and Pete Maravich, who had his jersey retired via three different teams.
