Charles Barkley dampened fans’ hopes about Wembanyama

When the San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama as the No. 1 pick in the draft, it sent shockwaves through the NBA world. However, he dropped some hints that suggested the rookie would face a formidable challenge when competing against other iconic bigs in the league. Chuck noted, “I’m very excited to see him play, but like I say, we don’t know these guys until they start playing against other NBA players. I’m pretty sure there’s no Joker in Summer League. No LeBron.”

That is to say, Barkley thinks Wemby is still unproven. While his freakish athleticism and natural talent have been on full display in the pre-season, Chuck wants us all to remember that the regular season is different. Still, “It would be great if he’s great,” remarked Sir Charles.

Undoubtedly, the 19-year-old will face a challenge as he strives to meet the high expectations of fans by competing against the NBA’s elite. The question remains if he can effectively lead the team. It’s worth noting that Barkley has expressed some opinions regarding their prospects in the past.

What does Barkley think about the Spurs’ future?

Although the journey ahead for San Antonio will be strewn with obstacles, the team’s current abilities imply that underestimating them would be ill-advised.

With the addition of the dynamic Victor Wembanyama, fans have a compelling reason to closely follow the team’s performance. Nonetheless, Barkley’s outlook doesn’t appear to lean in their favor. Perhaps it’s because of his poor experience playing with the original ‘Unicorn’, Manute Bol. Regardless, Barkley’s stance on the Spurs and Wemby has remained the same for a while.

On Sirius XM’s NBA Radio, Barkley said, “This notion that just because you have all this hype and you’ve been kicking a– in France all these years…that don’t mean nothing when you step on the court next year.”
