If you want an Allen Iverson story, just ask Andre Iguodala. He seems to be loaded with legends about The Answer that no one knows about. Including his knack for ribbing him in front of everyone. Iggy dished one such embarrassing anecdote from his rookie era when Iverson mentored him. And it involved a huge hip-hop mogul.

Iverson may have unintentionally caused a hilarious generational trauma within the Philadelphia 76ers franchise too. While Iguodala couldn’t get to call his mentor on it, he ended up roasted again.

When Andre Iguodala arrived in Philadelphia in 2004, Allen Iverson was an eight-year veteran. He was already a star on the court who had Michael Jordan tripping on his feet. Everyone back then recognized him for the style icon he was and for bringing the hip-hop and NBA together in ways it wasn’t before.

Iguodala has many stories about Iverson. He revealed one such story on the Point Forward podcast with his own rookie, Evan Turner. It happened when AI took Iguodala to the 40/40 Club. Incidentally, the owner of the club and rap titan, Jay-Z himself, was there.

Iverson introduced Iguodala to Mr. Carter in an energetic fashion. Iggy tried to keep that vibe and said his name was “Andre Iguodala.” You’d wonder what was wrong with that but Jay-Z didn’t give him much of a reaction. Iguodala didn’t think much of it either.

Until the next day when Iggy got on the bus with the rest of the Sixers. “As soon as I get on the bus, ‘hey this stupid young punk, we meet Jay-Z and he tell him his whole name I’m Andre Iguodala. He know who you is, fool. He watch TV.’ And he just go off on me,” Iguodala recalled about Iverson’s scolding.

It was not misplaced though. The Answer gave his protege an invaluable confidence boost. “Like, ‘bro, don’t you ever say your whole name to somebody. Like, you here now, people know who you are.'”

Though it was sound advice, Iverson pretty much ribbed the rookie in front of the whole team. If that wasn’t difficult enough to get over, Iverson would mess with Iggy even more.

They’re the coolest duo on and off the court. And by my most accounts, Allen and Andre are touted as two of the best things to ever happen to the 76ers. That dynamic was formed right from Iggy’s rookie year.

Iverson had not stopped at roasting Iggy on the bus. At the press meet, he teased him mercilessly about his suit. To the uninitiated, Iverson didn’t do suits, and Iggy would later buy him a formal wardrobe to keep with the NBA dress code.

Evan Turner, who came to the 76ers in 2010, would then point out, “How he bothered you is exactly how you bothered me.” Apparently, Iggy teased Turner about his suit too. Now Turner found out where it originated from.

I was 7 when I saw 'Space Jam' but didn't know till the third rewatch the lead actor is actually a living basketball legend. It was while studying journalism that my friend would go on about the Warriors from Golden State. Keen on athletes' personas outside their arenas, it was Stephen Curry's confidence and philanthropy that drew me to follow the news on NBA pros and explore sports media.
