The Garden of Time. What a lovely theme for the 2024 Met Gala! Looking stylish and ever-so-glamorous, celebrities came together to celebrate this year’s exhibit, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.’ But despite wearing a beautiful dress, Dwyane Wade‘s wife Gabrielle Union couldn’t make her critics happy.

D-Wade and Gab treated their followers to stunning images of their outfits. As much as they matched, to the keen observer, the Met Gala is all about following the aesthetic. Many feel the couple fell short. Dwyane Wade dubbed it “The reawakening” stepping out of the Carlyle Hotel in his 2024 Met Gala look. He kept it dapper in a lilac suit, courtesy of Versace, and accessorized by a Cartier necklace. It was inspired by the men in his family who kept it classic and suave.

His neat ensemble both complemented and contrasted Gabrielle Union’s Michael Kors creation. She exuded gilded glamour in her high-neck Michael Kors gown with hand-embroidered sequins resembling mermaids scaled in ombré patterns of different hues, such as lilac and teal. The embroidery took the meticulous attention of 12 artisans and 9,500 hours to complete. Union even revealed that it took 63 days to complete just the entire beading process of her Met Gala outfit.

Interestingly, her Iris Van Herpen gown in 2021, which is considered one of her best looks at the Met Gala, took 1,400 hours to make. Union has attended the Met Gala six times; five times with her husband. They have usually coordinated their fashion vision while still staying unique. But the fashion police on social media were not happy. They were of the opinion that she didn’t follow the theme.

This time around, her stylist stated that while Union was already in love with her outfit, all he needed was the Miami Heat legend’s approval. “If I get Dwyane’s stamp of approval… If she walks out of the room and he has some very reactive comment, then I know I’m doing a good job,” Kikis said. 

Completing the sea siren look is what appears to be a little silver starfish in her bun. Tiffany & Co. drop earrings, a starfish brooch from Elsa Peretti, and bracelets with platinum, diamonds, tourmaline, and black opals enhance the look. Wade said their goal at every Met Gala is to stay unique but also show that they’re a pair. Together, they worked fabulously. Fans loved how they looked together. But was that the goal at the Met Gala? No.

Not a walk in the garden for Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union

As the theme goes, the dual fashion statement was reawakening for their fans, who had a lot of emotional reactions to spill. Union’s outfit elicited mixed reactions on whether it was compliant with the ‘Garden of Time’ dress code. While the likes of Zendaya, Lily James, and Gigi Hadid, among others, clearly had floral aspects to their looks to match the dress code, Union didn’t. “Another one… the dress is [flame emoji] but the theme was garden… how did we end up in the ocean?” wrote one user.

The couple got their five-year-old daughter, Kaavia’s approval on the outfit but she’s a little biased toward all things aquatic. During the event, Union revealed, “There’s only one girl we care about what we look like and that’s pleasing Shady Baby. She was like, ‘Mommy, you look like a mermaid!” But for viewers, this elicited a, “Siiiiiigh the color scheme the little mermaid deserves to have.”

“She is so stunning… this dress is everything.” It was so Disneyfied, someone was worried, “King Triton would snatch her up.” For the uninitiated, King Triton is the ruler of Atlantica in the world of The Little Mermaid. Again, Kaavia had a role to play here. “She is obsessed. Like, going with the theme of the water of the elements. That’s all Kaavia. Like, she is a water baby,” Union said in an interview at the event.

However, many critics were not happy with Union’s outfit. In fact, her hairstylist was also not spared. Comments like “Gorg!!!!! The hair tho… cmon hairstylist!!! How did you miss?!” cropped up because fans didn’t like that odd undertone on her bun. It didn’t seem to match the rest of her hair. Some social media users were sure she was on the wrong red carpet. “She looks like she’s attending the little mermaid movie premiere, not the met gala.”
