The NBA had one of its biggest controversies in 2015. There was a flat-out brawl in the NBA, and it was a wild time. While a lot about the incident was in the media, the event was also relevant in pop culture. Although there are other incidents in the NBA where someone was punched, Kanye West’s namedrop highlighted this particular incident.

While Kanye’s name-dropping was to assist ‘30 Hours’, his song’s?storyline, it was purely fuel on the fire. However, about seven years later, the NBA veteran dismissed the song’s narrative by saying that there wasn’t any shred of truth in it.

The infamous brawl of 2015

In 2015, all the major headlines were dedicated to Matt Barnes for what he did to Derek Fisher. The 43-year-old punched the then-New York Knicks coach. That incident had the hoop community in a chokehold for several months. The reason behind this altercation between two NBA veterans was Fisher dating Barnes’ ex-wife Gloria Govan. What fueled him even more was the fact that Fisher was around his kids without the knowledge of the 43-year-old. Barnes was angry over the fact that Fisher didn’t feel the need to tell him about this and played a role in keeping Barnes in the dark.

However, over the years, the two veterans have made peace between them. Barnes has said that, “We buried the hatchet,” and now there’s no animosity between them.

Recently Barnes was in conversation with Andre Iguodala on his podcast. When asked about him being namedropped by Kanye over his fight, he had a very heartfelt response. He said, “Me and Derek have been cool since the following summer”. Barnes said that they realized the responsibilities in their lives and decided to focus on being better instead of holding something against one another.

He said that they are just “two men” who are trying to raise two men and that shouldn’t be compromised by anything.

Matt Barnes on being namedropped by Kanye

The NBA and hip-hop music are very closely associated. We often hear some of the biggest artists, referencing some of the biggest basketball players in their songs. Similarly, in the song 30 Hours, Kanye referenced Barnes and his brawl with Fisher. He had said, “I’m about to drive 90, 90 miles like Matt Barnes”. However, as per Barnes, the lyrics are nothing but an exaggeration because he didn’t actually travel 90 miles.

He said, “It’s kinda like urban legend when you hear it because I didn’t drive 90 miles.” In fact, it was only a “10 minute” drive from where he was before the incident.
