Love triumphs hate is Charles Barkley’s story with golf. Despite a terrible swing, not an ounce of improvement, being trolled by Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, and being mocked online, Chuck can’t put down a club. His unrequited love for golf was the running theme of his appearance on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. Though the majority would agree that Chuck isn’t a great golf instructor, he tried to teach or wreck David Letterman. At least Chuck hasn’t lost his drive (pun intended) for golf.

Letterman is not known for golf and he wondered if Barkley gets tired of playing 18 holes in a day. Not only does Chuck go a whole course, but he also plays on every day off. The veteran interviewer can swing a baseball bat from either side of the plate but doesn’t know if he’s righthanded or lefthanded in golf. But for an avid golfer and amateur, both were even matched with how bad they are.

That begged Letterman to ask a question a lot of people requested of him. “I hear a lot of people saying, ‘Oh, if you see Charles, ask him about his golf swing.'” Barkley knows why people want to know about it and he explained why he’s so bad at it. “I have a nervous twitch. I had the yips badly,he explained on the Netflix special in reference to an old clip the show added of Barkley’s bad golf form. Barkley maintained, “Golf is gonna give me the yips.” His love for his next favorite sport doesn’t wane though.

After Barkley left Dave shook by dismissing the Indiana Pacers (the playoffs had not begun when the interview took place), Letterman sent a ball flying at some unsuspecting spectator. So Barkley – who also kept missing – decided to tutor his old friend. It went about as well as we suspected.

Charles Barkley School of Golf is now open

Barkley’s manner of teaching is throwing instructions like, “Open the face up” repeatedly before getting to the actual demo. Not very far from his ‘falling tutorial’ on Inside the NBA, Barkley demonstrated the good way and the bad way to swing on the sand. There was not much difference in either.

Depending on how you look at it, Chuck is either a good instructor or an okayish one. Because Letterman’s swing did look better than it was before Chuck’s demo but he still ended up hitting some random person on the greens again.

This will be another chapter in Chuck’s golf meme archive. Throw in his best pupil, aka David Letterman, and everyone on the course needs to duck.
