Duke is one of the most polarizing dynasties in sports.” An understatement from Duke alum, Carlos Boozer. Since he’s on Hot Ones with fellow Blue Devil, Jay Williams, the questions were spicy. But perhaps it’s JJ Redick feeling the heat. Despite a stacked collegiate career leading into an NBA career and a sportscasting career, Redick is not very liked by the very school he left a mark on. Williams just had to put that into perspective.

Boozer asked Williams that who among Christian Laettner, Grant Hill and Redick deserve the hate. Though both have a soft spot for Redick, Williams said, “It’s JJ, not even a question,” and Boozer agreed. But he wanted to know why too straight from the horse’s mouth. Williams instead implied that he might have set the stage for the Redick diss.

He narrated an incident to Carlos about when he was hanging out with their “brother” JJ. “This man [Redick] looked me in the eye and said it with a straight face, he’s like, ‘Yo Jay you think if you uh have you stayed the fourth year like you would have broke my scoring record?'”

Williams and Boozer both played at Duke from 1999 to 2002 before heading off to the NBA. Redick played from 2002 to 2006 during which he made numerous accomplishments including staying unmatched as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,769 points across four seasons. As per Williams, he would’ve come in the way of that record.

He told JJ, “You wouldn’t have been playing if we had stayed around. You would have been playing, you wouldn’t have got your bucket you got freshman year.” Perhaps he’s right. If Williams and Boozer had not gone to the draft that year, maybe Redick wouldn’t have been called from the bench to lead the team with 30 points in the ACC Tournament in his first year.

Williams said it wasn’t the question but the hilarious seriousness he asked with that was the highlight of the situation. The truth is, Boozer and Williams couldn’t hate JJ even if they tried. But somehow, he still remains one of the biggest Duke villains.

Redick has often talked about how he grappled with the negative attention. At one point he considered quitting basketball. After all, there’s only so much one can tolerate those horrid signs at Duke games including some making unsavory references to his little sister. Lately, he talks more about accepting the hate and being grateful there was no social media when he was at Duke.
